Do you have space at MySpace

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Dec 07, 2006

Alright I was listening to a local radio station (www.thebeat.com) this morning and they were mentioning how one of the DJs recently signed up for MySpace.com account.

Now I’ve known about various sites like this one such as Netopia, Hi5 and others but MySpace.com seems to be the more popular one that people have seemed to flock. Various people from regular Joe to high profile celebs seem to have accounts on MySpace.com and I wanted to see what the hype was all about.

Signing up was not a horrible ordeal as they ask for the basic of information from a new user.  Creation was instant and I did receive my confirmation email.  Login into the MySpace.com system was next and to my surprize (yea right) it looks like all the other networking websites out there.  It reminds me of Geocites back in the day. You could sign up for a Geocites account and start your own website. These sites like MySpace.com is pretty much the same idea. It allows those with no web design/programming experience to have their own little niche in the world wide web.

Most of the sites I have seen on MySpace.com are hideous.  They use colours that do not match with text schemes that make them hard to read.

On another note I noticed that they also have the ‘My Friends’ type section.  Where people link their MySpaces to each other and have popularity contests.  Sure MySpace (www.myspace.com/tingram_ca) has no friends linked to it but I did just sign up.  Though there are services out there that allow you to add ‘fake’ friends to make you look more popular.  I don’t have the URL handy but I’ll post it when I can find it again.

Would I continue to use Myspace.com and its serivices? Probably not, I personally do not see a use for it.  If people want to find me they know where to look.  Besides I have my own space on the web, right here.  I maintain and update whenever I want and don’t have any restrictions.

So the question is: Do you use MySpace? If so, why?

  • Hey, 90 million users can’t be wrong. But it’s really made for teenagers who are not overly concerned with ease of use issues. But would I use it? No. Like you, I have my own space.
And everyone gets one friend – Tom, the guy who started the whole thing. Jeez, I’d hate to see his friend list.

  • Yea I noticed that Tom was a friend, I deleted him as soon as I figured out how to.

  • I have myspace:

    …and Windows Live Space…

Live feels like an old man trying to be cool. MySpace definitely has that teenie bopper feel.

  • Besides I have my own space on the web
That is the reason why MySpace exists, it’s for those who don’t have their own sites – or have nothing tangible to write about on a real website.

  • True, though some of them are pretty bad and make me cringe :) Then again this site isn’t the best looking either and I hope its not hard on the eyes.

Though what’s better? Nexopia, MySpace, or High5?

  • I use MySpace to help promote my instrumental music.

Also, I have a profile for my band as well.

I agree with most of what you post here. I have my own space as well at taurusjames.com. But since I’m sharing music with the world, any popular, no-cost outlet is great for exposure.

Of course, myspace is not “my life” as it is with some of the kids and wannabes on that site. It’s a tool that I make work for me.

  • I have a MySpace, with over 200 ‘friends’ (most of them unknown to me) but it’s more or less redundant. As a blogging platform it’s useless as images have to be hosted elsewhere, and generally it’s very fiddly to use, half the time the preview facilities don’t work. Visiting other MySpace pages is usually a nightmare – endless embedded videos, often all starting at once, garish backgrounds and a general assault on all one’s aesthetic sensibilities. Besides that, it’s fine – not. :-)
