Art In Vancouver

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Sep 28, 2009

The other day I was browsing around Flickr and noticed that various photos have been uploaded of the new art display at English Bay. So far it looks like people have been enjoying it because of the size of this particular display, but what do people really think of this? I took photos the other morning as I started my walk around Vancouver.

Yue Minjun of China created this bronze art display which was recently placed in the little grass area between Davie Street, Denman Street and Beach Avenue. I walked by one day while they were digging up squares and pouring concrete curious as to what was being placed there. Well here are some photos of the bronze sculptures with the iconic face of Yue Minjun.

There are pretty massive and stand like 8 feet tall. They also seem to be able to take the weight of people as well. How creative could you get with these statues?

While out and about I decided to get a coffee over at Delany’s on Denman and then head towards Coal Harbour. The weather forecast said fog for the morning and I thought as the sun rose, the fog and water of Coal Harbour might provide some cool shots.

While near the Westin I remember how there was another art display that was recently put up and low and behold they had a similar sign informing people what it was about.

Wang Shugang of China created this based on the G8 Summit held in Germany. It’s pretty interesting to see the statues all sitting around in a circle int he same position having a “Meeting”.

After seen the two art display it had me wondering about another two in the Coal Harbour area that I remember seeing. Low and behold they have similar signs with explainations of what they are about. They also are numbered!

“Pillows” by Liu Jiamhua of China as well.

It makes me curious where the other art displays are located throughout the city. Do you know where? Have you seen this, or have you seen others around? What is your take on this sort of public displays of art? Clicking on any of the images will display them in a larger version without leaving the site or having a window pop up. Go ahead, click on a photo!
