Blog Stats For June 2008

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Jul 03, 2008

It is that time again where some bloggers will report what they have earned in the previous month and share some of their other statistics as well. Now many of you know I blog because I enjoy doing geeky computer things and I believe blogging can be pretty geeky. I’m not in it for the money but I also don’t say no to any one offering to pay me to have their advertisements on my site or write up a review for them either. My primary reason to blog is to talk about things that I find interesting and that other people will find interesting also. I also find that it helps me write better and hopefully my grammar improves over time, though I am sure a course in English writing would help too. Even though English is my primary (and only) language, the grammar aspect of it is not a strong point of mine.

With roughly 31 post entries for the month of June I was able to keep the content coming even though it might not have been every day. Most people seem to enjoy reading something new every day and at times I find it difficult to either find a topic interesting to write about or time to actually get a post published. For those who are interested in finding out what my top 5 most popular posts for June have been well here is the list:

Kal Tire: How They Can Screw You Over – I receive more and more views and comments each month on this particular rant post about the service I received from this tire company. It looks like I am not alone either as people share their good and bad experiences about the franchise.

Nude Cyclists Hit Vancouver Streets – In the form of a fun protest hundreds of nude cyclists hit the popular tourist streets of Vancouver during a warm and sunny day. It brought out smiles and cheering as they rode past barring all.

Sony Ericsson W580i First Impressions – It seems most people enjoy gadget type posts and I do like getting my hands on product to review for my readers. After all aren’t most people who read blogs have some sort of technical interest and joy for electronic gizmos?

Can A Samsung T10 MP3 Player Replace My Lost Apple iPod? That is what I set out to figure out when I lost my second Apple iPod Nano. Let’s just say I now own a third generation iPod Nano and loving it.

Sony Ericsson K850i Cell Phone Camera Review – Another gadget review though a bit more geared to the digital camera aspect of the cell phone. When I brought this camera to work people were excited to see and play with it. A good way to build hype I find is not only to write about it but to let other people play with the gadgets I receive for doing reviews on.

Quick Blog Stats for June 2008

Google Analytics June 2008

I find that some people like to follow blog stats from month to month and other people really do not care, in fact I vaguely remember reading that some bloggers think it’s shallow to display your stats. I like to display them because it helps to drive me to improve and continue on and I’m not just talking to myself. Other people might find other people’s stats a way of saying to themselves ‘Hey if they can do it, perhaps I can too’ and perhaps give them increased motivation. If you post the stats of your blog monthly I’d like to see them.

Visits: 3,334 (+10.62%)

Pageviews: 5,696 (+29.16%)

I love how my Visits, Unique Visits and Pageviews have all increased and continue to stay heading in that direction. Could it be people find my site more interesting or that my site is reaching more people than it used to. Either way it makes me happy to see that I am doing something right.

I am interested in seeing that Internet Explorer has actually beaten Firefox as the browser of choice to the people reading my blog in June but only by 2%. Previously Firefox was the browser of choice which tells me more internet savy people were reading my blog, and now more and more everyday users are reading my blog. Though I do suggest to those people who are using IE to make the switch and Get FireFox today! You won’t regret it, you’ll see websites the way the designer and developer meant for you to see them.

June 2008 Earnings

Now some bloggers out there are interesting in the financial gain of other bloggers, sure it is nice to see someone like John Chow making roughly $30,000 a month on his blog but the majority of us bloggers don’t nearly make a tenth of that. Other bloggers turn their noses up if you try and monetize your blog. Me I like to look at various forms of monetization to see what works best with my site. So far nothing really has given me a ton of money but that does not stop me in trying to see what will bring in some extra cash for a rainy day.

  • Kontera: $2.94 (+0.43%)
  • Google Adsense: $6.69 (+72%)
  • Reviews: $50
  • Private Ad Sales: $15

Total Revenue for June 2008: $74.53 (-62%)

Alright so I did not earn as much in the month of June as I did with the month of May but that is only because of the private sale ads were not as high and I have not really put in an effort towards private ad sales for June. The other types of ads though did see an increase, granted not a huge increase but an increase nonetheless. I still stand by the fact that if your site does not generate a lot of traffic it is best to stick with private ad sales. The other CPC (Cost per Click) type of ads will pay out higher with a higher traffic rate. Though affiliates such as Market Leverage might be more of help because they are a CPA or Cost per Action which usually pay out higher but are harder to drive traffic towards.

So in conclusion to the stats I have shared today from the month of June here at Tyler Ingram dot Com I am generally pleased with the performance. Things are heading in the right direction and I am still enjoy blogging, which is my primary reason for doing this right?

So what about your blog or website? Has the month of June been nice to you? Have you had increases in traffic, readership etc? I’d like to hear how you have done in the month of June with your site or blog.

  • It looks like your stats are going up, Tyler. That’s ALWAYS great news!!!

FWIW, I normally don’t post my stats (I did a couple of months ago when I had about 3,000 to 4,500 unique views, but there has been an increase from that in the last couple of months, in no small part due to my involvement with the blogging community).

I kinda felt that if I kept checking my stats I would feel obsessed, so I now check every now and then. Mostly, I use WP stats because I am such a clueless guy when it comes to FeedBurner :)

  • Boy I feel so little with on average 25 visits per day. Oh well one day, one day :)

But like you Tyler I blog because I like to blog and I do find it hard sometimes to have new content everyday. I just don’t want to post for the sake of posting, it has to have some meaning behind it.

Reviews are always nice and if anyone wants to send me stuff to review I’m more than willing :)

  • @Raul – I’m obsessed about stats. I like looking at statistics and numbers though I try not to look every day. It is nice to check periodically through out the month though. I find that all stat tracking services give different outcomes. The best would be ones that could read directly from Apache’s server logs and I might switch to something like that. Currently I’ve been using Google’ Analytics and what it does is it sends into to Google prior to the page loading which can increase from your site loading time. Oh perhaps that could be a blog post: Different between Google Analytic type service, WP Stats and then one that reads directly from Apache Server logs (if one has access to them). I’ll have to check with Rebecca if she’s using that new site tracking software for her site.

@GusF Don’t give up! But yes it can be hard to think of posts and I too try not to force a post out. People have been asking me what I post about and how frequent I post. I say I post about what ever I find intersting and then what might other people find interesting and I post them when I can. Weekends normally don’t have posting because I try and stay away from the computer lol Usually I don’t have computer access if I’m with the girlfriend and I like it that way. I don’t want to be changed to my computer if possible!

  • @ GusF – There was a time, Gus, when I had 3 readers. THREE. And I knew them all. My best friend, my brother and one of my female friends. So, yeah, while it is nice to have now a fairly steady readership, it takes a little while, and you DO write good content, so you should NOT feel bad about the stats you’re getting. You will build a really solid readership, trust me on that one.

@ Tyler – I have given up on associating specific events with my stats. Sometimes, like SteakCamp, I get a peak in stats. Then other times, like Father’s Day, I get a REALLY high number of visitors. Go figure.

  • @Raul is is fun to see spikes in traffic. I mean if I want a huge spike in traffic I write about a local event. Such as the Maple Ridge Truck Chase, or the Lululemon Mansy. It seems the day of, and the next few days following people Google like crazy for things like that here in Metro Vancouver (am I even part of Metro Vancouver? lol)

  • Hey Tyler,

I was shocked to read that John Chow makes that much money from his blog. Is it from all the advertising? Seriously, where does one make an income like that!
Makes me think that maybe I am in the wrong business!

    Cheers!
    Miranda
