Blogging and Time Management

Written By Tyler Ingram on Oct 15, 2008

When you write for one blog it can be pretty easy to set time aside to write out some blog posts if you have topics you want to discuss, but what do you do when you have mutliple blogs and have troubles setting aside time to write posts for? This is the situation I am currently finding myself in, multiple blogs but available time is hard to come by.

Multiple Blogs

One thing I need to look at is better time management. I am not going to state what the best approach is because everyone will have something different but I would like to hear how some of you set aside time to work on blog posts.

Blogging

I currently have 4 blogs and want to be able to create content for them on a continuous basis so that they are never any real lulls in post frequency. With one of the blogs I have started with Robyn, I hope to be able to keep continuous fresh content happening at least every day and the idea behind it is great and there can easily be new content every day on it.

As for this blog I always have troubles trying to think of what I would like to talk about and keep it interesting for people to continue to stop by and take a gander.

My photo blog can be kept up-to-date pretty constant due to its nature.

The last blog of mine I have not updated it for a while but I really should look into keeping it up-to-date as well. There are changes in the industry that this particular blog is involved in but I tend to slack off and forget to add new content to it on a daily basis.

Time Management

Perhaps what I need to do is look at setting aside an hour a day to write some posts? Though depending on the content being written that is not very much time is it? What about setting aside an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, that could help a bit too right?

With the quickly approaching Winter season I’ll have to better manage my time in regards to blogging as well. Robyn and I will be hitting the slopes at least once a week and since I am totally looking forward to bettering my snowboarding skills we do plan on going as much as we can.

Advice?

So how would you go about managing your time when it comes to blogging? I really enjoy doing it and the 4 blogs I am working on I really do not want to let them sit and go stale.

I have mentioned in the post about my September results for this blog that I wanted to be able to post more content here and keep people interested. I can see the relationship of posting frequency to incoming traffic and if I let my post frequency drop it results in a small drop in incoming traffic right?

I guess one thing would be to allow guest posts right? If this was a niche blog I could see that being a good thing, but since this particular blog is not a niche having someone post a guest post here would seem a bit odd. Though if anyone out there would like do do a guest post (for link love) I would be more than happy to talk to you about it.

Building a blogging empire is tricky isn’t it? ;)

I honestly don’t know how you manage that many blogs! It usually takes me 1-2 hours to write my single blog posts alone.

Perhaps you could just combine your blogs?

Following two blogs for one person can be difficult! Perhaps your photography posts could be interspersed with this blog…

    I’m not sure :)

  • I had my photos intermingled with this blog but for some reason I wanted to keep them separate and have different domains.

Editorial calendar. Wrote a post about this on BloggingNotes at http://www.bloggingnotes.net/maybe-a-blogging-workflow-would-work-for-you/

I have 4 blogs and lately I have been challenging myself to be at least 3 days ahead with the Wordpress future time stamp function. As we speak, I have three posts in line to see the public at 6 am for three consecutive days. It took me just over an hour today to do that. Now mind you, those benchmark posts require more time.

If you’d like a tool for managing your time and projects, you can use this application inspired by David Allen’s GTD:

    http://www.Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage and prioritize your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
A mobile version and iCal are available too.

  • @Dan thanks for the link, I’ll have to check it out this weekend!

I only have ONE blog and I have a hard enough time keeping it up!

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful and beneficial to your readers :)

  • Thanks John for stopping by. As I gain more experience with running the blog I will be sure to blog about it too.
