Can You Understand Spam Email
I’ve mentioned before that one of my tasks at work is to go through the Spam Filter manually to search out those emails that are legitimate but have been tagged as spam. On average how many emails do I go through for a company of roughly 100 people? On a typical week day I will go through roughly 3000 pieces of spam with about 1% of those being legitimate. On weekends when I come back to work on the Monday morning I can sometimes go through about 10,000 pieces of spam!
Now with going through so much spam I can see patterns to the Spam, but nothing that I could really create cool new filters for that I could sell for millions but I can see patterns based on seasons and upcoming holidays etc.
One thing I have noticed is how spam is getting worse in terms of trying to get past the various Spam filters nowadays, in particular is this spam email that caught my eye in regards to what it says:
Subject: I just started having sex, and my boyfriend keeps popping out when we do it.
Females always laughed at me and even gars did in the national bathroom!
Well, not I hee-haw at them, because I took M_E GA D IK
For 7 months and now my dick is excessively longer than civil.

With a mutiny and his murder in present-day Texas.

Does that make sense to anyone? Where is this ‘National Bathroom’? What is it to be ‘longer than civil’ and who the hell clicks these URLs anyway? Oh wait I’ve known people to click on URLs in spam messages and open up attachments that are in spam emails as well.
Now if you are curious as to where the URL (which I have not posted) goes it is for some ‘magical’ herbal solution for increasing the size of your penis. How many people out there seriously go for this sort of thing and purchase these ‘magical’ pills?
If it wasn’t for spam our bandwidth speeds would be higher, we would have less latency and I wouldn’t have to waste time checking a huge amount of bogus emails looking for legitimate ones!

Concerning the fight against spam, spam filters are not enough.
New initiatives like http://www.projecthoneypot.org are much more useful , tracking email harvesters, comment spammers, and spam servers .
