As some of you have seen via Twitter I have been starting to post links to a blog called WestCoastAlpine.com. What some of you might not know is what this blog is about, hopefully I can help explain it in case you were curious. If you are into winter activities in British Columbia or just in general I recommend following our updates (you can subscribe to the RSS feed) as … Continue Reading »

The past few days I've been slowly reading the book Blog Blazers: 40 Top Bloggers Share Their Secrets (author: Stephane Grenier) which I won over at Derek Semmler's blog and there is one point I would have to agree with in regards to being a serious blogger: Don't rely on blog hosting services such as WordPress.com, Blogger, TypePad. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good Blogger or WordPress.com … Continue Reading »

I just finished and confirmed our WordCamp Whistler 2009 hotel reservation for the Fairmont Chataeu Whistler at the base of Blackcomb Mountain. This should be a pretty fun and interesting WordPress Wordcamp as well as a good day for some ski and snowboarding too. Robyn and I are looking forward to getting up to Whistler/Blackcomb for this WordPress event, not to mention get in a couple runs in on Sunday. … Continue Reading »

Well finally after a while WordPress 2.7 has been released to the masses and so far as a first impression it looks pretty cool. Mainly the WordPress 2.7 upgrade seems more of a UI (user interface) upgrade for the administration section for WordPress blogs. If you are running a WordPress.com blog you should have already seen this upgrade go in last week. Yesterday seems to have been the day for … Continue Reading »

I was looking over my index page and wanted to modify WordPress' pre-built the_excerpt() function which limits the amount of words displayed for a particular post on my front page without cutting words in half. The draw back from using the built-in the_excerpt() function is that you can not modify how it works, there is not option to give the function arguments such as how many words to display.
So how … Continue Reading »

There are various conferences around the world that deal with various topics and levels of geekiness though this past Saturday would have been the first time I attended an unconference which was to be held at Granville Island in the beautiful city of Vancouver. What is an unconference you might ask? Well I have never really been told what it may be but whatever it is, it seems to be … Continue Reading »

Today is one of those creative days I have where I like to think about 'what can I do to make my site more interesting?' Well as I was browsing over at John's new layout which was designed by UBD I noticed that he displays his Twitter follower count in a dynamically generated graphic that was created by TwitterCounter.
I looked over at TwitterCounter to see what they were about and … Continue Reading »

If you own, run, maintain or even contribute to a WordPress site you might be one of many who enjoy being notified when someone leaves a comment on the site, I know I do. When someone leaves a comment I like to be notified relatively as soon as it has been posted so that I can check it out and reply if needed. Currently I am subscribed to my comments … Continue Reading »

What is WordCamp and why would I want to go? That was one of the questions I have been recently asked when people found out I was going to WordCamp Fraser Valley. WordCamp is a conference or small information session about various aspects of the WordPress blogging platform. Presenters of various topics talk for small segments about areas of interest to help share knowledge of this favourite Open Source blogging … Continue Reading »

Recently I have been noticing that the avatars on MyBlogLog have not been updating properly so I’ve made the switch (for my blog anyway) to deal with only Gravatar since their service is more reliable in displaying the proper avatar in which I wish display.
What is Gravatar?
Gravatar (Globally Recognized Avatar) is a web service that allows you to have a universal avatar (or mini graphic) that you can use to … Continue Reading »
