Christmas Holidays 2009

Well one thing that never surprises me is how busy the Christmas Holidays is for me. There are social things always happening throughout the month of December, there are 3 birthdays in just my family alone. Then of course there is Christmas dinners and New Year’s.

This Christmas holiday is a bit different than other ones and both Robyn and myself are getting excited about it. Why are we excited? Well let’s see if a photo helps explain it a bit better.

Granted the photo above is not one I took myself (because I have never been there), but it is a section of beach around Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo is located on the Caribbean Coast and known for the best surfing in Costa Rica. The Lonely Planet guide book we have said if we don’t mind the smell of Marijuana then we’ll fit right in. It actually sounds like Tofino but with much warmer water!

What else will be cool about this trip? Well there are a few things actually that will be cool and some things that will be new to me:

  • It will be my 30th birthday and I will be outside of North America, which is something I told Robyn I would love to do.
  • We are not staying at an all-inclusive resort. Robyn is introducing me to her style of travel which I am total excited about. Don’t get me wrong, all-inclusive resorts are cool, but I want to experience traveling in places that are not built up. I’m not into the lounging around the pool or sitting at the swim up bar getting hammered. Nor are large crowds of people my thing either. The seclusion of our trip will be pretty cool.
  • We’re spending New Year’s Eve in a Tropical Paradise. Yes we are still going to do the Polar Bear Swim, we just won’t freeze to death doing it.
  • I’ll be bringing my camera and laptop. Yup, I don’t disconnect and I plan on uploading, writing about our traveling as much as I can (internet depending). The place we’re staying does have internet access, and according to their staff it’s the best (if not the only place) that has a connection in Puerto Viejo. In fact they also have WiFi, so I’m going to try and blog from the hammock on our balcony! Did I mention one of the c0-owners of this 12 room place we’re staying at is originally from Vancouver?

I’m sure there are a lot of other things we’ll see, experience on our trip and we’re both looking forward to it too. T-minus 2 days! We fly from Vancouver to Phoenix and then to San Jose. Spend the night at a B&B and then head to our destination the next morning.

What are you getting up to this Christmas Holiday Season?

Wohooo that sounds fun! Let me know how it is. Last time I was in Costa Rica I got super jaded by how commercial and touristy it was in Tamarindo.

Looking forward to hearing about this place!

Have fun you guys. I will be hanging out in Vancouver trying to relax as much as possible :)

Oh there it is.. the map was dis-embedded. :)

Robyn said she has been to Tamarindo and it wasn’t her thing. She’s looking forward to going to the opposite coast with me. I can’t stop reading about it or looking at photos!

Sounds like a great trip. Have a good time, Tyler. I’ve never actually been further south on this continent that the northernmost towns in Mexico.

Does sound like fun. I’ve never been to Costa Rica and have always wanted to go. I don’t think I’m as adventurous as Robyn and you are.
Looking forward to reading more on about it!
