Coming Soon To A Blog Near You

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Feb 28, 2008

I’ve been learning how to create Wordpress themes (templates) and I am surprised that they are not too difficult to create. If you have knowledge in CSS, HTML and some PHP it’s pretty straight-forward in creating a theme.

What I have been working on is converting my custom blog script into a theme for Wordpress. So far it’s going pretty well and when I am done, there shouldn’t be too much that is different from my custom blog script to the Wordpress version.

I’ve taken the default Wordpress theme (Kubrick) and using it to learn about how Wordpress as a blogging engine functions, I have been able to strip it bare and re-create my site. Surprisingly I have learnt a great deal within a short amount of time and I look forward to creating Wordpress themes that people can download. I will also be looking at creating plugins or improving plugins that already exist as well.

So soon, this blog that you are looking at now, will be Wordpress based. Why? Why not, it’s a great learning experience for me and that’s why I do all of this in the first place. I love to learn!

  • And WordPress is such a broad platform with many many plugins. I started messing with themes months back. It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

  • Hi - man am I on a roll tonight! I’m looking at creating a custom wordpress theme as well. I see a lot of great themes out there, but nothing that really says who I am. I found a couple of great tutorials - http://www.wpdesigner.com/2007/02/19/so-you-want-to-create-wordpress-themes-huh/ and excellent set of tutorials that teaches how to create your own wordpress themes. I’d like to re-do my site (www.oibo.org) and my new site (www.mohamedbhimji.com) into something more modern. I am working with a graphic artist for mohamedbhimji.com…

Of course the other way to create a custom theme is to reverse engineer on you like and customize it.

  • I’ll have to check that tutorial site out later today. Thanks! Re-designs are always fun as long as they turn out decently though lol.
