Dine Out Vancouver: Mums

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Mar 08, 2007

Well I thought I would treat myself by experiencing a fine-dining experience somewhat similar to that of Stephen’s or John’s more recent adventures during the Dine Out Vancouver event, but with the budget I currently have. Luckily there was a restaurant open; Mum’s.

Now Mum’s is a nice quaint little place situated out in the suburbs (and close to work) and has all the amenities one could ever need. Their menu consists of many great types of food but I was thinking, since I was on a budget, I’d go for something small but with flavor.

So after placing my order for Sweet and Sour Chicken I sat and waiting while drinking a nice cold glass of water.  I timed it and it took only 4 minutes and 30 seconds for my food to be ready to me that is definitely an all time record for eating out.

Sweet and Sour Chicken with Rice

My Sweet and Sour Chicken looked pretty normal, there were no fancy frills or gimmicks like eating live seafood but I would jump in and hope for the best.  Now one thing I did not like was the nutty, almost wood like quality of the rice.  I’ve had similar meals to this one and its always the rice that turns me off from eating. The chicken (which was processed) was grisly and not leaving my taste buds wanting more.  Even the sauce, if they call it that, was not up to par.  The Sweet and Sour was more like sweet and sticky, almost like eating honey.

Overall the service was great, well not really I pretty much had to get the food myself and to think, I also had to do my own dishes! The location is awesome and I am sure in the summer this place will be rocking. On a side note I was offered the Nutritional Facts for my meal and at a whopping 280 calories with only 3g of fat it wasn’t that bad, well ok I didn’t finish the whole thing and had to remove it from my table.

Would I come back to Mum’s? Of course I would. I have always felt welcomed and it’s like home to me. The menu is awesome when they run their Home Cooked Specials and it does get a bit busier in the evening. It’s a bonus that the staff and other customers know me by name as well.

So for those who dine at a local Mum’s restaurant I hope your experience is like mine or better. I would also recommend good tipping too no matter the service quality.

  • LOL, I enjoyed this post! Looking forward to more in the future.

  • I was hoping that some people might find it a bit humorous. I know my Mum did. Thanks!

  • Lol, at first I just thought Mum’s was another Canadian restaurant that I had not heard of but then I looked at the picture and realized where Mum’s was at.

    Very nice post!

  • Nice take on the frozen dinner! Next time, try the “Hungry Man” ;)

  • Very funny and creative! I kept looking at the photo thinking, “heat and eat…heat and eat..” or “airline food..airline food…”

Reviewing a frozen dinner? Great idea! I love the “drinking a nice cold glass of water” bit.

Regarding the rice: yep, I know what you mean. Rice in microwaved meals is usually bad.

  • I have yet to find a microwave dinner that has decent rice. I don’t know what it is but sometimes I don’t think it’s rice at all! lol
