With the rain covering our city, I thought it might be fun to play around with my Poor Man’s Macro setup. Technically my macro setup consists of my kit lens (EF 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS) and a broken EF 50mm f1.8 that has been reversed mounted onto the threads of the kit lens. The only downside of this is the extremely shallow DoF (Depth of Field) to play with. I guess the fact that the best focusing distance to any subject I try and shoot this way has to be pretty much within 1cm of the lens too.
What did I take photos of? The Stigma of a Tulip and an Amaryllis, though parts of the Anthers are somewhat in focus too.

It would be cool one day to have a dedicated macro lens. I briefly borrowed Gus’ macro lens during a photowalk and would love to have my own. I have some pretty neat ideas in my head when it comes to macro photography as well as it would come in handy on my forest photowallks too.

You can see in the above photo how close the lens is to the flower, pretty much touching it.

Like my Canon XSi, my Canon 7D has the feature Live View. It also allows you to digitally zoom in two increments of 5x and 10x which can not only help focus for macro work, but can also help focus if you use the video mode too (the manual recommends you focus in manual while shooting video).
That’s what I’ve been playing with, what have you been up to?

If you want to borrow the macro again, let me know. I’d be more than willing to lend it out to you.

The first photo is especially striking. I’m impressed with the level of detail the Canon was able to capture.
