Global Warming: Niagara Falls Ontario

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Jan 09, 2007

I recently received some email from a friend at work about the effects of global warming and to my surprise I learnt something new today.  It seems back in the day, like way back in the day, during the early 1900’s that Niagara Falls used to actually freeze over!

Now I don’t think it does. I don’t live in Ontario nor have I ever been to the falls but I have not heard of it freezing over in my life time.  Is this proof of global warming in Canada? With warmer temperatures I could see that they might never freeze, but would an increase of water flow over the falls also hinder the ability for the water to freeze like it does in the pictures?

Now I don’t take credit for these photos, obviously I was not born in the early 1900s and the images do not say who took them but it is pretty amazing that something as grand as the Niagara Falls used to freeze enough for people to walk up to or even walk on top of.

Perhaps one day I’ll visit the falls since I do plan on doing a cross Canada road trip one day.

On a side note, global warming is becoming a larger problem. Look at the various super storms we’ve been having around the world. The increase of hurricane activity I would say would be a side effect, even the weather here in Vancouver seems to be effected, sure it rains a lot but they are saying that our summers are getting warmer and drier every year. I’m sure there are other factors but even if the average temperature increases by a degree or two that does have some environmental impact.
