Early this morning I had a couple of people mention to me how there was a high speed chase which involved a 10-tonne truck on Lougheed highway south of Maple Ridge (near Albion). Video footage of the chase was captured by the Global 1 traffic helicopter.
Watch Video of the Truck Chase in Maple Ridge
It is intersting to see how the driver of the truck just weaves back and forth on the road without actually hurting any one in the beginning. As you can see on the video the truck is being followed by various police cruisers.
I guess I wouldn’t really call it high speed but I wonder why they wouldn’t have stopped the truck sooner.
Updates:
A 49-year-old naked man had stole some overalls and the truck from a farm.
The man tried to escape on foot after the truck came to a stop was then hit by an unmarked police SUV.

More Updates (May 28 2008):
The man will face the following 7 charges:
- 3 counts of assault with a weapon (the truck)
- 3 more charges each of dangerous operation of a vehicle
- 1 count break and enter
- 1 count for theft and flight from an officer
Though the 3 counts of assault with a weapon were downgraded from previously being attempted murder charges. I wonder why they lowered the charges from attempted murder to assault, did he not try and smash a police cruiser with the truck at one point? – Source: CBCnews.ca

It’s no OJ Simpson that’s for sure. Kind of a slow meandering through the boonies chase.

Yea it is pretty slow. Though it looks as if the person driving couldn’t get it into a better gear going up the hill. It was said to have started in Pitt Meadows, though how it ended up in east Maple Ridge is a bit weird.

Considering the size advantage of the truck, the fact that the tires were already blown and the damage it did to the cars it hit I don’t think there was much choice in trying to stop the truck. It was gonna go until it hit something much bigger or they driver gave up – the cop cars could do little but chase it.

Heh… yah. I moved here from Edmonton, and the first thing that I noticed is how truckers drive here. They think they’re either Formula 1 race car drivers or they’re zipping around in Ferraris! Jeeez, some of these guys go in and out of traffic like it’s nothing… A 4 or 6 ton truck (withor without the trailer) CAN NOT swerve in and out of traffic. Bad for your cars paint job.

I was watching this on the news this morning as it was happening! I’m not sure what your linked clips shows. At one point the police cruisers were extremely close, but I don’t know what they were going to do. The semi was really close to hitting oncoming traffic at some points and it did hit a cruiser that was parked.
I guess the police did a good job of blocking entrances to the highway since there were no cars in the direction of the semi!
Crazy!

Thats unreal! He said his intentions were to attempt to blow up the bridge with the truck.
