House Cleaning Blogger Style

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Jun 10, 2008

As I monkey around my blog this evening looking at ways to improve the overall look and ease of use, I am slowly compiling a small list of tasks in which I need to complete. Most of the items in which I need to tackle are things behind the scenes in which you (my visitor) cannot see. But don’t be alarmed, as the small house cleaning tasks will allow for better data handling, statistic gathering and allowing my blogging to become even more efficient!

As for site layout changes I have altered a couple aspects of my theme (yes this is my own theme in which I designed and ported to Wordpress when I was using my custom blog) and the main item I have left is to fix the footer portion of the website so it is cleaner and functions properly. This also includes the repeating background I have which borders my site. I recently found a small design issue with it while working on another site of mine and I need to straighten out the kinds in it.

I also need to look at why MS Internet Explorer is rendering all my text style as Bold where as Firefox and such do not, but this is probably a simple CSS issue I need to look at. I wish Firebug worked in IE.

  • I noticed my visitor count drop last week so started digging into “why” and it looks like EntreCard was slowing the blog down and in some cases crashing it!! Aaack… dropped EntreCard and everything seems to have cleared up.

I have also been cleaning up and getting rid of bad plugins and widgets. You know, the stuff that seems oooober cool at the time but you wonder 6-months later why the heck you installed that in the first place…

I posted on a similar topic a few weeks back as well (shameless plug: http://www.oibo.org/annual-wordpress-widget-plugin-smackdown.html)

    Take care!

  • I noticed some slow load times here depending on the network the blog has to look to for scripts. Google Analytics is usually alright, but I find that Izea, mybloglog and some others sometimes takes a while. I need to look over what I have loading in the background and figure out if I want to keep it or scrap it.

On another note, I fixed my IE Issues and fixed the footer issue. now I just have to figure out what i want to load in the footer of my site :)
