IRC – Things have changed!

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Dec 14, 2006

Ok seriously, it totally frustrates me to no end about how the IRC has changed over the years.

I used to be an avid IRC’r back in the day when the EFnet was your only source of servers.  Now there are thousands of server groups which is ok, but it is the people within the IRC that royally drive me insane.

The #1 pet peeve that I have now with the IRC is that fact that alot of people want you to ASK PERMISSION to send them a PRIVATE MSG!  What type of crap is that? Netiquette?

Why the hell should I ask someone to private message them?  Do I ask you permission prior to sending you an instant message with Messenger?  Do I ask you previously if I can text message you via my cell phone?

Can someone explain to me what the hell has happened?  People can send me private messages without my permission and it doesn’t bother me.  I don’t expect someone to ask me to allow them to send me a message, just send it. If you spam the crap out of me, then I will just ignore them.

Gawd I hate how the internet has changed over the years. Too many people who think their ‘Computer Savy’ and think they own the internet and it’s protocols because they can turn on their computer and send an email.   I miss the days where the Internet was taboo and only people who could use dial-up modems could connect to it. Back before Napster was known to the public. Back in the days of Archie, Veronica, Gopher etc. Back when I connected to the ‘intenet’ via a BBS here in Vancouver (Mindlink, IceOnline and others).

Just before I stopped using the IRC the Undernet sprang up and then a flood of others.  Can someone PLEASE tell me why it is considered NETIQUETTE to ASK PERMISSION prior to sending a person a PRIVATE MESSAGE in the IRC?

Fake IRC session:

SharkBait: Hey n00b1232 can I send you a private msg??
n00b1232: No you cannot!
SharkBait messages n00b1232: You little snot are you really that dumb?
n00b1232 messages you: Hey don’t call me that :(
SharkBait messages n00b1232: Hey I didn’t give you permission to private message me!

Now I’m just angry… GRRRRrrr

Now don’t tell me I don’t know anything about the IRC. I have written my _own_ IRC Client that is almost fully functional. It reminds me of my days on my MAC LCIII when I used Ircle as my client.

I miss the days of DCC file-sharing (which is still one of the more popular ways still). Taking over channels with a backdoor in Windows 95 (MacNuke and Connection Reset By Peer!).  Scripting Bots in Perl. Oh the fun I had!
