Today has been nice and overcast so I thought I would get out in the morning and go for a little walk with my camera. I walked around Lost Lagoon towards the rose garden in Stanley Park. There wasn’t much to take photos of at the Lagoon as it seems most of the critters were probably still asleep, or on Tourist schedules (you know for feeding etc…) but the flowers were in bloom at the gardens.
There are some really beautiful flowers in bloom right now. Not many roses but that’s alright, the other flowers make up for that. Roses are probably one of my favorite flower.
The above photo was taken as close as I could get and still be able to focus with my kit lens, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS. I love the colours in it as well as the design of the petals.
I want to get those cool macro photos of the water droplets, the ones that refract the landscape around it? The above photos is alright (remember, I’m my biggest critic), but I do like it. Yes that was with my broken 50mm reversed against my kit lens.
This photo is pretty gnarly looking. Did I just say gnarly? Sure did! It is the center of a Queen Elizabeth rose. I’m Loving this poor man’s (or person’s) macro technique!
I went outside on the balcony just recently and noticed this little (bee-fly?) guy hovering around the flowers. I just slowly moved my lens around with him and took photos. Remember, I’m holding my Canon XSi (450d) with it’s battery grip, kit lens while holding the 50mm lens backwards against it. Not an easy feat, but the results are pretty good! You can even see the pollen on the guy’s eyes!!
Overall, I am really enjoying this little aspect of photography. I just sit here and wonder what sort of live I can capture if I had a proper macro lens!
Remember, you can click on the photos above to view a larger version of them laid over top of this post without leaving your browser window! Do it! With these macro shots, it’s pretty cool.

I commented on some of your Flickr posts already… but these are so stunning, Tyler.
I mean, it’s incredible what you can do with the device you’ve created! What a great DIY project!
The water drop one is just beautiful.
One day I’ll be able to afford a macro lens…. one day

Everytime I see quality pictures like yours I say: buy yourself a decent camera and make photos. Then I say – you have no talent and all you need is idiot-proof camera with autofocus and X megapixels. Your photos are great but I think I’d never manage to do similar.
