Well sometime on Monday I had an issue with MSN Messenger Live Beta (version 8.1) where it was telling me I had messages that were sent to me while I was offline. I was in the middle of a conversation with a buddy and it showed that he was offline at the time when I received his history message. I thought this was a bit odd so I closed Messenger down and restarted it.
It seems that once I restarted it I could not log back in. The server status message on messenger’s website said everything was up and running, but I still could not log in. Messenger would keep telling me that there was no connection and that my firewall or proxy could be causing an issue. The error code I would receive is 0×81000306, which is the error code for connectivity issues caused by either firewalls or proxy settings. This is not my issue and to figure that out I would run the connectivity troubleshooter that is supplied with messenger and it would be green checks all the way.
I also tried to repair my network connection (renew/release) and that did not solve it. Though if I read the full message box that would pop up containing the 0×81000306 error I would have read that if I have any issues that would not go away with restarting Messenger then I should uninstall 8.1 and re-install MSN Messenger Live 8.0.
So that is what I did, I uninstalled 8.1 and did a full install of 8.0 and now I do not have any connectivity issues. Though if Microsoft would have been nice and allowed me to remove the 8.1 patch like they did with the Beta of IE7 it would have been a little easier to deal with.
Perhaps I should go with Trillian? I never could get used to Trillian’s interface but there are a few features I liked about it.

I use MSN all the time, recently having upgraded to Windows Live Messenger from MSN Messenger 7.5. I took a long time to upgrade, although I tried all of the betas out. I liked the contact organizing feature, they have improved it a lot in the new version of msn. I erased a total of 89 msn contacts that I acquired over the years. (I’ve had my msn account for 6-7 years now.)
My main complaint with Trillian/Gaim/Miranda are that they dont include a lot of the “features” that MSN has. I have not tried Trillian that recently, but I used to hate the GUI, even after skinning it. I did like it for AIM though, but I don’t use AIM much at all anymore. For IRC I use an addon script for mIRC.

I tried installing Gaim just the other day and when I went to sign in (using my messenger account) it crashed and had to close. It would keep doing it so I just uninstalled it and currently sticking with Messenger.
I’ve tried Trillian back in the day but I could not get used to the interface because I am (was) so used to using Messenger.
I’ve used ICQ (in fact my number was sub 1,000 back in the day) but Messenger was what all my friends where using so I jumped in too.
As for the IRC, I just don’t use it anymore, I have too many grips about the way it is now and it just angers me.

Gaim has been giving me the same error when I downloaded it recently. I gave up and kept using msn. I only wanted to find out who had me on their contact list, but I was able to do that with the new version of msn.
I could not get used to the Trillian interface either..I also used ICQ brefly, but my friends started using MSN so I had to too
IRC annoys me a bit, usually its the people I’m chatting with..so I’m just selective about the channels I idle/chat in.
