Gaim has been giving me the same error when I downloaded it recently. I gave up and kept using msn. I only wanted to find out who had me on their contact list, but I was able to do that with the new version of msn.

I could not get used to the Trillian interface either..I also used ICQ brefly, but my friends started using MSN so I had to too :)

IRC annoys me a bit, usually its the people I'm chatting with..so I'm just selective about the channels I idle/chat in.

I tried installing Gaim just the other day and when I went to sign in (using my messenger account) it crashed and had to close. It would keep doing it so I just uninstalled it and currently sticking with Messenger.

I've tried Trillian back in the day but I could not get used to the interface because I am (was) so used to using Messenger.

I've used ICQ (in fact my number was sub 1,000 back in the day) but Messenger was what all my friends where using so I jumped in too.

As for the IRC, I just don't use it anymore, I have too many grips about the way it is now and it just angers me.

I use MSN all the time, recently having upgraded to Windows Live Messenger from MSN Messenger 7.5. I took a long time to upgrade, although I tried all of the betas out. I liked the contact organizing feature, they have improved it a lot in the new version of msn. I erased a total of 89 msn contacts that I acquired over the years. (I've had my msn account for 6-7 years now.)

My main complaint with Trillian/Gaim/Miranda are that they dont include a lot of the "features" that MSN has. I have not tried Trillian that recently, but I used to hate the GUI, even after skinning it. I did like it for AIM though, but I don't use AIM much at all anymore. For IRC I use an addon script for mIRC.
