My Top 5 Flickr Photos

Written By Tyler Ingram on Jun 24, 2010

I was looking over the new layout for Flickr this morning, well actually I was looking over it last night but more so this morning. Anyway, I am a person who loves to look at statistics, I don’t know why but I just like numbers in that way. So what better way to look at stats on Flickr than checking out what the Flickr community thinks are my top 5 most interesting photos. I’ll display them in reverse order starting at number 5.

#5

Large Canada Flag

This massive flag on the corner of Georgia Street and Howe during the majority of the Olympics was one of the more popular tourist spots in the beginning of the year. Even some vandals manage to break into the construction site and carve a big FU at the top of it one evening.

#4

Coal Harbour

I think I might have taken this one when I first picked up my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L lens. I always thought that concrete, glass buildings and a dramatic clouded sky help build a good looking HDR photo.

#3

Lightning and Fireworks

This was during one of the Celebration of Lights down at English Bay last year. Robyn and I were going to do a Fireworks Cruise but we skipped out on it and ended up watching the show from our balcony during the lightning storm. I have a bunch of photos that display the lightning, but this one shows some of the fireworks in the same frame. Though it would have been cooler to capture a larger burst of fireworks with the lightning, but when does Mother Nature ever cooperate?

#2

My Home Office

Yea, another HDR photo of mine. I find that when you want a better exposure when the foreground and background contrast too much it’s easier to display as an HDR. This is my workspace at home, don’t mind the fan in the corner, I’ve washed it since. I want a bigger desk!

#1

2010 Winter Olympic Outdoor Cauldron HDR

I’m sure a bunch of you have seen this particular photo. I shot it through the chain-link fence before they added the gap and Plexiglas. In fact out of Interestingness, Comments and Views this one ranks #1 out of all my photos. It might not be everyone’s cup-of-tea, but I do like how it turned out. In fact, they will be relighting the flame on Canada Day. I wonder what the new pavilion will look like, I’ll have to check it out if I can.

Thoughts

I do find it interesting that the majority of my most interesting (according to the Flickr community) photos are that of HDR (high-dynamic-range) photos. I like HDR photography, but it has to be not over-processed.

Personally there are other photos in my Flickr Photostream that I like more than what the users of Flicker like, but that’s all just personal opinion right? There are some photos (well perhaps a bunch) of other people’s photos who make it to the Explored section of Flickr and I just scratch my head at them. I’ve seen better composition, better ability, better subject yet… *shrug* ah well.

Are you on Flickr? If so, what do you think about the photos the Flickr community finds to be the most interesting in your photostream? What do you think about how the whole Explore aspect of Flickr works?

Like I tweeted today… “Girl in wheatfield photos will get on Flickr explore and be commented on by lonely single guys with lots of cats.”
