MyTechnorati WordPress Plugin Update: v0.2

Written By Tyler Ingram on Sep 11, 2007

A special thank you goes out to Ross (of www.simplehelp.net) and Rod (of www.rodtempleton.net) for finding a small issue with MyTechnorati. It seems that even though the WordPress plugin would store the date and your Technorati rank, it might not do it consistently or fetch it properly at all.

What caused this little issue? Well it seems I was comparing two dates incorrectly. Instead of checking if the current time was greater than the stored time by 1 hour. I was check to see if it was less which of course would be why in Rod’s case his Technorati rank stayed the same since the first day he installed it.

Ross on the other hand was not pulling a proper date but changing the code so that the two dates would compare properly has fixed this for him. He just needs to install the GD2 library to have the image show up properly now. Ross please let me know if you get it to work.

So please if you are reading this and you have installed MyTechnorati, please download the latest version from this post or the left side bar and over write the existing files in the MyTechnorati plugins' folder.

MyTechnorati Update: Version 0.2

  • Fixed comparing two dates
  • Inserted a build version to the options page so you can tell what version you are running
  • Works with WordPress 2.2.3

What has been up with Technorati recently?

Has anyone noticed the large fluctuation of their Technorati rank? I have and boy is it a nasty fall. While working on fixing the little issues my WordPress plugin had I noticed that my Technorati rank went from ~34,000 to 51,661 then down to ~49,000 and then now it is currently sitting at 56,486 and all in the matter of 1 day (less than 12 hours actually). My Authority ranking dropped from 135 to 106 and to me that is pretty sad.  Could this be because links to my site are non-existent or am I not receiving as many ‘fresh’ link backs as I previously had? It is interesting nonetheless and I hope I can figure out an answer for it. I miss having my Technorati rank in the 30,000 range and watching it go the wrong way is a bit disappointing.

I think it’s related to the recent ‘upgrades’ that Technorati have been doing (the revamped front page etc). It has been a bit wonky for the last couple of days. One view has my rank @ Rank: 4,644, another shows it as 5,222.

I’m waiting till later tonight (off-peak hours) to install GD2, but I’ll let you know how it goes for sure.

Worked fine after GD2 was installed. Cheers!

    came from Ross :)
was wondering if there’s one for blogger :)
    this looks nice :)

There currently isn’t a version for blogger, though I could look into it a bit more. I’ve only used blogger to leave comments on people’s posts and if I didn’t have my custom blog, I would personally choose WordPress.

Thanks to someone asking me where I got the nifty widget I just discovered this update… I’m scared to install it now that you’re talking about plummeting numbers hehe

I will be looking at a better way of informing people of updates actually. I was looking at WordPress repository as well. Perhaps I’ll include a function that checks my site for the latest build.

    You’re numbers shouldn’t drop lol!
