Photo of the Day: City Waterfalls

Cascading Water

When it is not raining, I tend to walk from the WestEnd to the Burrard Street SkyTrain station and on my way I always walk past this waterfall. This particular one is at the corner of Thurlow and Melville and it is definitely one of the nicer ones in the city.

I remember someone telling me a while ago that the reason why various buildings in a downtown centre have waterfalls is not only the aesthetics, but because it helps drown out the sounds of vehicles. I don’t know if that is true or not, but I do sure enjoy seeing them throughout our little city.

I should head over to this location again with my dSLR, a tripod and do a few long-shutter photographs of it. Perhaps I’ll do a waterfall tour of downtown Vancouver.

I also took the following shot of the daffodils that are planted at this intersection too.

wonderful design, especially important to use water for urban design, where most people lives among artificial fixed structures.

Dear Tyler, I remember some years ago my cousin came to Vancouver for a company seminar (he lives near Los Gatos, CA) and was overwhelmed by the beauty and number of Vancouver’s city waterfalls. Now my sister and her daughter are coming in mid-July and I would love to take them on a walk in downtown Vancouver before or after we go to the Art Gallery…a little tour of the waterfalls. Did you ever decide to do a tour for visitors? And if not, could you give me a few pointers as to where I could take my guests? I live on the North Shore and don’t roam around Vancouver that often. Thank you for your kind suggestions!
