Post A Photo Everyday?

Written By Tyler Ingram on Jan 31, 2011

It’s a crisp Monday morning and I am sitting here in the EhPod at BCIT going over some Math homework when I started thinking about the recent photos I took over the weekend. Now, due to school I have not been able to get out much with my camera but I do try and find at least sometime to take a photo or two.

I have mentioned in the past that I would love to do a Photo a Day here on my site, but that doesn’t seem to have happened. Though, when I do find a photo, I usually find more than 1 that I would like to share. Sure I could probably create a bunch of scheduled posts, but I like to share multiple photos at once, not just one photo at a time. What do you think? Would you rather see 1 photo per post, or a few photos per post?

Anyway, here are some photos from the last couple days.

Varied Thrush

A varied Thrush. I saw this guy bouncing around in the various rhododendrons near Lost Lagoon the other day (pretty vague eh?). Not a bad shot without branches in the way. I tend to find these guys only during the colder months, I guess this would be south for them?

Boats

Yesterday, Robyn and I went for a little stroll at Horseshoe Bay with Robyn’s mother. It was a nice sunny day and Horseshoe Bay is a nice quaint place to enjoy a small walk with a nice cup of coffee. While we were there, we thought about walking on to the Bowen Island ferry, though we decided to head up the Sea to Sky Highway to Squamish and check out the Eagles at Brackendale instead. Kind of a last minute thing as the sun started to descend behind the mountains.

When we arrived at the more popular eagle viewing area there were only 3 eagles to be seen in the trees; 2 adults and 1 juvenile. I’ve heard rumours that the salmon have been few this season which has caused the low number of eagles. I won’t lie, it was pretty chilly up in Brackendale. The snow covered mountains were pretty and I attempted to do some 3 exposure HDRs (hand-held) of the surrounding area.

Thought I would try and convert one to a monochrome or black and white photo from another 3-exposure HDR I took.  I like them both, what do you think? I try do do HDRs when a single exposure won’t work properly for the landscape I am shooting. The second photo looks a bit soft, though when I zoom in at 100% the detail is sharp. Perhaps I’ll crop a portion of the snowy mountain and do a separate post?

Afterthoughts

4 photos in a post is not that bad. If I post more, I find that load times might suffer a little bit. All my photos that I do post here are actually fetched from Flickr first. Saves me on bandwidth and storage space I suppose, though slows down page-load time a little bit. Guess I can’t have it all right?

I thought about creating a sort of WordPress plugin for photographers that would turn it more into a photo-blog, or at least allow for an easier way to incorporate a photography portfolio. I can’t remember where I saw it (perhaps a panel at SXSW?) about how WordPress is/has taken over Web Design? I am sure WordPress plays a large role these days in Web Design & Development, but it will never completely replace how people design a website.

Schooling

For those who are wondering, school is going well. I am enjoying the SQL and C classes, though struggling a little with the Discrete Math class. Something about how this particular sort of math has FAR too many letters associated with it. (Cr(n, r), or (r+n-1) / r. Makes sense right?

Our Java class is not as much fun. We’re looking at ways of throwing exceptions and dealing with errors than anything really. It hasn’t been as creative as our C class has been.

Co-op is also interesting, though it technically doesn’t start until the end of term. If we find a company who will employ us, we can work a 4 or 8 month term with them. Learning and gaining industry related experience while being paid to do it. Not a bad trade-off, if you ask me! The networking with people in the industry isn’t a bad thing either. I just have to figure out what sort of work I want to do during it and find a company that would suit that type of work!

I still haven’t really figured out what Option I want to take either. Options here allow us to specialize our schooling. The two options I have been looking at have been Data Communications and Digital Processes. The latter being a requirement for getting into the Game Development program BCIT here offers. Gaming is fun right?

Trust me mate, committing to a 365 project is a lot tougher than you expect. ;)

  • I’ve thought about doing it for about 2 years now, but it is a really difficult thing to set aside some time to do! Is it cheating to use photographs from a different day? Or do you always take a photo everyday to use? lol
