Salary Calculator for 2008

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Jun 10, 2008

Now some people do not believe that the online salary calculators are justifiable or accurate but when they predict an annual salary which is much higher than what I am currently making I start to wonder: Am I being short-changed, or are these salary calculators fake and misleading?

I’ve used a couple of these online salary calculators which usually show you the mid, average and max range for an annual salary for a particular job. Most of the time my job description falls between many titles; Webmaster, IT Specialist, Web Developer etc etc but I always try to pick the one more relevant to what I am currently working on.

Currently IT Business released their new 2008 Salary Calculator and I tried it out. I still fall below what they expect me to be paid. Well at least what they say is the National Average. Perhaps I am with the wrong employer? Who knows, but the following is what they calculated for what I do. Their description is pretty close to what I do too, though I would add on a bunch of more responsibilities which they do not list. As I said before in previous posts I have my hand in a lot of different aspects of my employer.

Professional Catagory: STAFF/TECHNICAL POSITIONS
Job Title: Web Developer
Organization Size: 100-499
Industry: Manufacturing
Location: British Columbia

National Average record Size: 35

How Does Your Salary Compare? 2008 Base Salary % Increase 2008 Total Cash Compensation

% increase

National Avg. $57307 4.64% $65929 11.92%
Job description:
Web Developer
- Responsible for programming Web site application code, page links and content links. Designs, develops and implements software packages for Web sites. Troubleshoots, debugs and implements software code. Designs, builds and manages Web sites. Develops installation programs for Web sites.

Now looking at this chart I am well below the ‘National Average’ but the description is pretty much bang on for what I do. Well i do a bunch more things than that but it gives me something to work with right?

If you take the 2008 Salary Calculator how does your current salary compare to the National Average? Granted this calculator is for Canadians though I am sure if you take it and you live outside Canada it will give you a sense of what you might be able to make up here in Canada be it less or more. I’d like to hear what it calculates for you!

  • I think you need to take into consideration the number of organizations polled to deliver the results. It is likely less that 30 and also likely to be based on the input of the people making the money, rather than the organizations paying the money - and we know that most people exaggerate their salary on polls.

At the end of the day, if you feel like you could be making more money, or that you are worth more - you should seek out alternative offers and present them to your employer if you’re happy where you are.

Companies will always pay as little as they need to in order to get the job done.

  • That is true, but I guess it would be nice to make more no matter where I am right? But when i see this average or the one over on Monster.ca, or another employment website even the low averages are higher.

I guess what would be nice is to find out how much other people get paid for similar tasks to mine to see if I could be making more right? I have talked to my employer about what ‘others get paid’ and they said that’s crap and they already pay me too much.*shrug*

  • They didn’t have my job listed! Lame!

  • I wouldn’t pay too much attention to these things. When I was working full time in IT I often used to look at the industry average (for the UK) and it would have you believe that everybody was earning £65,000+ with a company car. I was happy earning half of that, makes you wonder where these averages really come from, I certainly didn’t know anybody in a similar role earning the average?

  • Yea I guess I won’t look into it, though the amount isn’t a bad thing. I guess I would like to know roughly how much people in my area industry make.

  • Yup - I know I’m not making what I should. The solution? Look around! Seriously I do wonder about these surveys, how much is truth and how much is fabricated by the individual. What irks me more than anything is companies that have salaries all over the place - meaning two people doing the same job, one is grossly underpaid for the same job. I’m a Director of Customer Service & Operations and we went through a salary standardization a year ago for all our agents. Made quite a few people very happy!

  • My position doesn’t exist in that salary calculator, but I did find it amusing when it asked for company size. Where’s the option for, um, one? Haha, I guess it’d be the under 100. :)
