SMS With Apple 3G iPhone

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Aug 16, 2008

One of the most popular uses of today’s cellphones is the ability to send text messages (or SMS). More and more people are finding it easier to send text messages to their friends than dialing their number and calling them. Text messaging is also more convenient than calling especially if you just want to ask someone where they are, how their day is, or where you should meet.

Apple 3G iPhone’s SMS feature

Now I’m a fairly new user to the Apple iPhone series and when I started to use the text messaging feature (the SMS app) of the iPhone I was greatly pleased. The Apple iPhone allows your text messages to be stored as ‘conversations’ with a fun and clean interface. No more having to scroll back a couple of text messages to see what the person said to you among your other text messages, the SMS app allows you to keep each conversation separate from one another.

It also has a great way of displaying your messages outgoing and those that are incoming.

Things To Change

There are a couple of things I have noticed while text messaging with my Apple 3G iPhone and they are as follows:

iPhoneConversationsNew

Program Orientation – I would like to be able to rotate the iPhone into landscape mode when text messaging. It would allow for an easier time with the keyboard, similar to the way Safari on the iPhone works.

Removal of Conversations – Yes I know you can clear the conversations but the initial contact is still stored at the main screen. I don’t care if I have 8888+ or some number from a voicemail or missed called. I want to be able to remove those. I would keep the regular conversations from my friends etc, but at least if I clear the conversation allow me to remove it from the initial main list.

Overall I am quite happy with Apple’s implementation of conversations for text messaging and it allows me to follow text messages from multiple people easier and quicker. I also don’t have to go back and check to see what someone said, or if it’s a question from a while I never got around to looking at I still have the ability to look back to see what the previous messages were.

How do you find Apple’s take on text messaging with conversations? Does it make it easier for you?

  • Ok so I found out that you can delete the conversations at the main screen.

  • Its is very good feature …We can easily identify the conversation happens between the friends …

Nice feature and thanks for sharing ..

  • But iphone 3G dont allow to forward the msg received, please correct me if i am wrong

  • Nope it doesn’t allow for you to forward a message once received though I don’t think I have ever had a phone that allows that sort of use either.

  • Blackberry’s will allow you to forward sms and mms. I definately agree a landscape keyboard would be ideal! I have been a diehard BB user for a long time, but have decided to give the iphone a try. I have been impressed with this device but with the currents snags(slow typing, apps not opening/apps closing on their own, dropped calls, no landscape keyboard) I am about to jump back on the BB wagon. When the BB Bold is released, I will definately be there to compare!!

  • The only thing about the Blackberry Bold was that the screen is still relatively small isnt it? Seeing photos it’s still have the size of the iPhone’s screen. Not sure if I could go back to a smaller screen on a phone now.

  • Amazing feature …Which we can track the conversation in single message …I hope apple will bring more changes in it

  • One change I know I’m looking for is the ability to use SMS in landscape mode so that keyboard is slightly larger. Perhaps the latest release firmware (due friday, v2.1) might have it?

  • I just love the messaging system. although if apple can modify it to landscape yes it would be lovely with a bigger keyboard space… and also throw in the sms forward function and sms archive function, that would make it all the better….

  • Aye, I agree with the landscape option for sms, the others I’ve never used but I am sure they too would be useful!
