Social Networking With Facebook.com
A while ago I mentioned that I have a MySpace page and I was also looking into the other sites such as Nexopia and Hi5. I forget who told me about it, probably my little sister, but Facebook is another social networking site which used to be geared towards college and university students but is now available for anyone with an email address.
What do I like about Facebook?
One of the things I seem to like about Facebook is that everyday someone new finds me or I find someone new. I don’t mean new as if I’ve never meet them before but new as in someone I’ve known either in Elementary school, High-school or even previous places of work. It’s definitely a good way of getting in touch with those you’ve lost touch with.
You can search for people by full name or even narrow it down to the high-school you graduated from in the year you graduated from. It also shows you through other people’s profiles who you are mutually acquainted with, which I think is the coolest thing because you find out that throughout life people’s paths cross one way or another.
Another interesting tidbit (from Wikipedia) is that Facebook is the number one site for sharing and displaying photos other than the dedicate sites like Flickr or Webshots. You can upload photos into albums and you friends get to see them without having to tell them about it.
You’re also kept up-to-date with what is going on with your friends on Facebook. Kind of like a mini RSS feed it shows you what recent activities your friends have done like, Tamara added to her favorite movie list, Kyle added Chris as a friend or even how Katie added new photos.
To me Facebook is definitely a valuable tool and I like it a lot better than MySpace or Nexopia. Sure you can add a bit of flare to those two sites, but the way the information is displayed and what you can find on Facebook is a lot more useful and interactive. You also don’t get those ugly MySpace pages where the person who created the theme for their page is horribly un-color coordinated.
So if you haven’t already done so, check out Facebook! Register and start searching for those old friends you’ve wanted to get in touch with!
