Sony Ericsson W580i Camera Test
Today I decided to walk to the local Subway (Eat Fresh) to pick up myself a tasty 12 inch sub for my dinner and since the weather was decent I thought I would take my new Sony Ericsson W580i and test out the 2.0 Mega Pixel camera that is built into it.
Now I am not expecting the greatest in quality for a 2.0 MP camera phone but it will definitely perform better than the VGA (640×480) resolution that my Motorola Razr had. I would also like to say that I have yet to see a camera phone out perform (in at least quality) from a regular digital camera, so if you know of a model of cell phone with a built in digital camera that can out perform my Canon SD750 send it to me and I’ll review it here.
Back to my photo walk.
The camera that is built into my Sony Ericsson W580i is nothing to really write home about. It difinitely does not replace my regular digital camera but I am sure it might come in handy one day when I don’t have my digital camera on me (when is that though?). Though from the point of a cellphone with a built in digital camera, it isn’t lousy and does the job of taking point-n-shoot shots. I did find that it was a bit confusing at first to use since the zoom feature only seems to work when using the video capture mode and not the photo capture mode. A bit odd eh?
Now I have also uploaded the camera’s photos in two ways; regular method which is to upload via the USB cable to my Flickr account, and then via the cellphone application ShoZu which uploads (via my cell connection) to my Flickr account as well. I am a bit hesitant to see my cellphone bill after uploading 2MP digital files to my Flickr account (9 photos in total at roughly 350kb each).
Example Photos By My Sony Ericsson W580i:

As you can see from the above photos, they aren’t anything spectacular but they can get the job done if you’re looking for a quick snap of an image to show to someone at a later time. I wouldn’t use these photos for anything really other than ‘oh crap, forgot my regular digicam but I can take a quick shot so I don’t miss out‘ sort of photos. Ever been somewhere beautiful without a digital camera? Ever see something where you really wished you had your camera with you? Well the camera in the Sony Ericsson W580i can be a temporary stand-in and save the day!
If you are curious about the other photos I took while on my walk to and from the local Subway today you can check them out in my photo set on Flickr: From Phone.

Hey Tyler,
If you are looking for a really awesome phone that incorporates more cutting edge digital photography, check out SE’s K850. I just got one myself.
But the W580 has the pedometer, a selling feature for me.
Cheers!
Miranda - Ah it’s a Cybershot, forgot they had their Cybershot technology built into a phone. Pretty interesting features though, it has a anti-blur (like image stabilization), 5 MP, the auto-focus thing would be nice, and the xenon flash/light would be handy.
Though would I really want to have my phone replace my digital camera? Less items to carry I suppose.
there is no comparison in a mobile camera and digital camera..
but now in these days which mobiles are available in market..there cameras are high resolution..like one of mine..
Having the same phone as you do I agree with most of you comments here. It is fun to just have when you do need to take a photo. I find that it takes better photos outdoors and don’t use the Auto white balance as that usually sucks.
Once uploaded to Flickr, I use Flickr’s editing tool to make the picture look better.
To avoid the charges on Rogers, I use their $7/month internet browsing add-on.
