Symantec Ghost and SATA Drives

Written By Tyler Ingram on Nov 12, 2006

I could not get it to work no matter what I tried. I needed to Ghost a WinXp Pro installation to a new WD SATA drive and no matter what I tried it kept booting with that horrible A disk read error has occured.

I tied using Ghost 9's Drive to Drive feature with no success. I then tried to create an image of the installation to a seperate partition on the IDE drive. Then used Ghost's Recovery CD to load the Ghost Image onto the new SATA drive but had no success in that either.

I also tried the Win Recovery Console and tried to FIXMBR (fix the Master Boot Record) as well as FIXBOOT (fix the boot partition) neither of those worked either.

This morning though I bit the bullet and just installed XP directly to the SATA drive with no issues. Wish I could figure out why the Ghost Image would not allow the drive to boot. There are no errors on the disk, so I am stumped.

Now I am just having to install the 64+ security updates and the misc other windows updates there are. There are a few other things I'll need to do to get the computer finalized but it will be great fun when it's done.

ECS KA3MVP Extreme with AMD Athlon 64bit X2 3800+, 1GB DDR2-4200, 160GB SATA drive with eVGA GeForce 7600 GTS and some other fun goodies.

It's a love hate relationship with computer. Hate to love em, love to hate em!
