The Real Meaning Of Christmas

Written By Tyler Ingram on Dec 14, 2007

What is the real meaning of Christmas? What is your take on what Christmas means? I had a conversation with a friend the other day and they told me that Christmas was about giving gifts to other people. It is?

Without getting into the Religion aspect of Christmas I thought Christmas was a time to spend with friends and family. Why is it so commercialized now? It’s upsetting to see the retail companies putting out Christmas product for sale BEFORE Halloween!

Am I bitter about the way Christmas is done? No, it’s just that I see things happening earlier and earlier each year. Though the same goes with all the other holidays I suppose too.

In fact this Christmas I believe will be better the previous Christmases and I am looking forward to the rest of December as well!

I have also placed a poll here.

To me, Christmas is about spending time with family as it’s one of the only opportunities to do so throughout the year.

Doesn’t hurt that my 21st birthday is 7 days before christmas either ;)

My birthday is 2 days after Christmas ;) So the question to you, like many people ask me, Do you still get decent amount of presents or do they ‘combine’ them?

I had a post about a woman who pulled her child from school because there was “too much Christmas”, which turned into a minor debate about what Christmas is all about.

I think it’s important to make a clear distinction between modern day, secular Christmas, and the religious celebration of Christ (which historically doesn’t even have anything to do with Christmas actually).

In my mind, the modern secular Christmas is mostly a shopping frenzy, but deep down is about connecting with family and friends, which basically amounts to a modern day Winter Solstice.
