I think it's important to make a clear distinction between modern day, secular Christmas, and the religious celebration of Christ (which historically doesn't even have anything to do with Christmas actually). In my mind, the modern secular Christmas is mostly a shopping frenzy, but deep down is about connecting with family and friends, which basically amounts to a modern day Winter Solstice.
