Today Is A Lovely Day For Walk

Writen By Tyler Ingram on Mar 25, 2007

Well because the weather cleared up and the forecast was not calling for any rain I asked my mum where should would like to go when she got home from her Sunday breakfast ritual. She suggested the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest in Maple Ridge because there are numerous paths we could venture through hopefully offering us lots of photo opportunities.

Fuzzy Bunny

There were a few photo ops when we arrived.  A fuzzy bunny decided he (or she? I can’t tell) would pose for the camera in between chewing the mossy grass.

Surging, Roaring North Alouette River

Further down we came to a bridge where the flooded North Alouette River roared beneath providing us with a great opportunity to create a cotton-type effect with a slower shutter speed.  I took many shots and we eventually moved down the bank and I stood against a tree while I took this shot of the roaring, surging river.

After our little trek through the forest my mum thought since we were so close we would head over to Golden Ears Provincial Park and take a peek at Alouette Lake. We decided to head north past the Alouette parking lot and up to the Goldcreek parking lot. Now for those who don’t know or don’t remember, the Provincial Government has placed a parking lot fee for anyone who visits our lovely parks. Sure for a day trip $5 might be a lot to pay but they also allow you to pay $1 for 1 hour. To me that does not seem unreasonable. They also mentioned on a sign on the way up to the park that the Government has granted the Golden Ears Provincial Park a little over $650,000 for upgrades!

Anyway we got the the parking lot at Goldcreek and headed down the trail (which follows one of the large tributary rivers that feeds the Alouette Lake) and took a few shots along the way. Once we got to the Goldcreek beach something that we were not used to unveiled to us; the lake swallowed the beaches!

Alouette Lake Floods its Banks! (Hey that Rhymes!)

That’s right! Due to the huge amounts of rain we’ve been receiving lately the Alouette Lake was so high that there was no beach! But you must be asking yourself; why is it a big issue? Well the beaches at the Goldcreek spot were quite large and you could walk out on the many shallow sandbars for many minutes before getting your feet wet!

No beach!

The photo above shows you how large the south end of the lake is. You see where those bushes sticking up in the water are? Well those beaches used to be a lot further out than that and those bushes were on land that only gets wet when it rains.

  • Beautiful photos! Are you still in Prince George? I love that area so much. I traveled thru there with my family in January of 1982 (we were moving from Oregon, US to Alaska, US) and lost my pet cat! We had to move on and we later received a letter from the managers of the hotel we had stayed at. They had found him and adopted him and he lived the rest of his days in prince George.

  • I was actually only in Prince George for like a yaer then we moved down to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

So now I’m back in the Greater Vancouver area (about 40mins from the downtown center).

It’s good they found your cat! We’ve had a couple here go missing to the local Coyote population.

  • Breath taking photoes. Looking at those pictures really gave me a sense of “cooling”.

  • Hey thanks for the comments and thanks for visiting!

  • wow your pictures are more and more amazing! and that bunny is so cute!!

  • It is a cute bunny isn’t it? I’ll have to look over my more recent photos and see what else I might want to share. Thanks

  • As others have mentioned, cool pics. I am also in photography a bit. What equipment do you use (camera, lens, etc)?

  • Currently I have a Canon EOS 350D (well it is technically my mum’s) with the kit lens which is 15-55mm. I am looking at getting a lens that is more on the telephoto side soon though. That should be fun to use.
