Upgraded to WordPress 2.7

Written By Tyler Ingram on Dec 11, 2008

Well finally after a while WordPress 2.7 has been released to the masses and so far as a first impression it looks pretty cool. Mainly the WordPress 2.7 upgrade seems more of a UI (user interface) upgrade for the administration section for WordPress blogs. If you are running a WordPress.com blog you should have already seen this upgrade go in last week. Yesterday seems to have been the day for the self-hosted WordPress people to upgrade.

So far I am liking the changes. The icon set they choose goes well and is pleasing to the eyes. Even as I type this out the Add New Post section is completely different; style-wise.

Upgraded to WP 2.7

If you have not done so I would suggest upgrading your WordPress blog to the 2.7 version. It’s some nice eye-candy when I am working on the back-end aspects of my site. I do have 3 other WordPress blogs I need to get upgraded but I’ll play around with it on this site first for a bit longer before I do the upgrade on the other 3.

How do you upgrade a WordPress install?

Well I find the easiest way (might be more daunting) is to EXPORT your WordPress items to your desktop (Manage -> Export -> Save File) this I find easiest and it will ensure your posts, categories, comments, authors etc are all saved. The other option is to run various WordPress backup scripts, or even do an export on the MySQL Tables (just to make sure).

Then you delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folder, upload the newer versions and then just copy over the files in the root install directory. Ensure you don’t overwrite the wp-config.php file, or your wp-content, wp-themes, wp-plugins directories either. That would be a really bad thing to do.

After you’ve done all that you just log back into your administration section and click the ‘Upgrade’ button. It will do it’s magic and you should be ready to go!

Some people do deactivate their plugins prior to upgrading but so far in my experience I have not had to do that. I don’t think there has been any major changes in the WordPress codex to warrant such an action. Though if there are major changes (other than the Admin backend) then it might be a good idea to deactivate. I would assume that if an upgrade did break a plugin then you might get some random PHP error, such as function does not exists, file not found etc. Usually warnings that fatal errors though.

So how did your WordPress 2.7 upgrade go? I’d like to hear from you about it.

I like this new version. The UI is pretty cool. The upgrade was very easy as well. I just backed up my config file and then used Filezilla to merge the new the new code with the old. Thats it. Easy Peasy.

  • Yea I used FileZilla too!

Installed and upgraded on one of my sites. Not looking too bad at the moment. I do like the new back-end “smoothness”, I must admit.

Is there anything I should be worried about before upgrading other than deactivating plugins? Do plugins also need to be upgraded?

I’ve only ever installed Wordpress fresh. Never upgraded :)

  • Just don’t replace your wp-config.php file or your wp-content folder ;)

    I’ve upgraded 3 blogs without issues :)
