Recently we have experiencing some really odd network issues here at work and the only way that we found out we were having issues was I could not get to my blog or any other site that I host on one of our public servers.
Here at work we have two internet feeds, one with Shaw and the other with Telus (combined speed of 10mbps). It seems that on our Shaw lines (dual T1s) we were experiencing some severe packet loss (10-25%) and Shaw was saying nothing was wrong on their end so it must have been our end. After many hours of troubleshooting it we were able to determine that our Cisco router had a rule in it that somehow ‘magically’ turned itself on and was the evil culprit.
Needless to say I will be looking to transfer my websites over to a reliable hosting provider. Sure I’ll miss the unlimited resources I have access to (hardware upgrades, backup machines, unlimited bandwidth etc) but when connection issues happen due to our network I’d rather not have the hassle of having to figure it out to limit the effect of the downtime and also have other people breathing down my back asking what’s wrong and when it’s going to be fixed.
Over the next little bit I will be looking at various web hosts in the local area (I like to support local business) and make the move to a more reliable service. Even though I’ll have to start to pay for my hosting, private ad sales that I receive will help pay for the hosting expense.

Tyler,
I highly reccomend Web Storm in Kelowna. I’ve got 3? 4? maybe 5? accounts with them, and have had nothing but top notch service!

Does that mean that I’m going to have to move as well?
I was thinking about moving anyways, but I like to think about things like this before I do them. Well, that, and I’m really lazy.

Cam: I took a look at their options, granted the unmetered traffic is nice (like I currently have) but the rest of their stuff is like everyone else and for a slightly higher price than what I would pay over at BlueFur.ca
Sean: You don’t have to no. I’m leaving the server up since it also has other purposes which are a bit more work related

I\\\’d recommend Bluefur. I used a coupon (john chow has one for 15% off, monthly).
