Why I Wont Have An Apple MacBook Air
As many people out there know, Apple has released their newest innovative laptop the MacBook Air. This insanely thin laptop looks pretty cool and I definitely would love to own one but I know it would drive me insane if I had the $1700US to spend on it. Though the more I look at it the more it would cost for me to own one.
The one thing that bugs me is that it has no optical drive. This is great for those who might have a newer Mac and have the ability to use the ‘Remote Optical Device’ option that the MacBook Air would require when loading software or viewing a DVD, but since I do not own a Mac of any sort, I would have to dish out more money and get an external optical drive. Would I go with the SuperDrive? Or would I cheap out and go with another USB based optical drive? Either way it would add to the cost of the already expensive cool toy. So if I don’t own a Mac and I can’t dish out more money for an external Optical Drive, how would I ‘Make The Switch’ if I can’t load applications to the MacBook?
Now I’ll probably never see a MacBook Air let alone play with one but I have always wanted some sort of Apple MacBook. I just like their simplistic design and the MacBook Air definitely takes it to a new level. Come on a laptop slightly thicker than your index finger?? Being able to play on the web for about 5 hours without the battery dying? Yes wireless devices normally drain the batteries pretty quick, well for me anyway.

I feel like the only person in the world who would not purchase one and I’m a huge Apple fanboy!
I’ve got a Macbook Pro, Macbook, iPhone, Power Mac (2x), and just about anything else you can think of….but I will not be buying a Air.
This device is over priced and not really what the consumers were demanded…they wanted a smaller Macbook Pro at a lower pricing point. Not a device that requires you to carry around a USB CD-Rom, USB Ethernet, and any other needed tools.
I have not played with one, and thats being honest, but I just see the MBP as a much better buy for the price. For you not having owned a mac before, what is it about them that makes you want one? That’ll help decide which box to buy.
After using the MacBook here at work, and the Mac Mini for the project I’m doing for science world, I wouldn’t mind owning a Mac at some point in the future. Especially one of the somewhat-beefier versions of the Mac Mini.
Of course, I’d probably just end up putting Linux on it.
I used to own an LCIII (68k) Mac. I started my programming career on a Mac (pascal, turbo pascal, C, C++) back in the Classic days.
I’ve always wanted a MacBook, even back when the Powerbooks were out I’ve always liked them. I like the minimalist design to the newer ones.
I’m happy with my PC, but really only use it because of gaming. I’d go either to Mac (if I could justify spending the money) or a Linux based system.
Lot a cash but worth every penny if your working online 24/7
I don’t think it would be work the money. I’d rather spend it on a regular MacBook at least then I would have an optical drive and a Ethernet jack if I couldn’t get a wireless link.
I have a desktop computer, I’m looking to buy a laptop which is small in size so I can take it with me. I’ve got a 19″ toshiba laptop which may as well be a desktop cause its too big to take anywhere. I think because I have a desktop and already own portable usb drives the non-existing drives wouldn’t be a problem for me. I also would throw on linux. I wish I knew where in vancouver had these so I could try one before I bought it.
The only places in Vancouver that I could think might have them would be Simply Computing, or The Mac Station.
Other than that I did hear there are plans for an Apple Store in the Pacific Centre Mall downtown before the Olympics are in town for 2010.
If you get a Mac i suggest (of course if your a gamer) to get the MacBook Pro a little more expensive but if you game alot more with it. Just a little suggest.
I’ve been a PC user for over 10 years, and it was actually the MacBook Air that got me looking at Mac computers. After checking it out at an Apple store, I decided that it wouldn’t be able to take the beating that I would give it, so I ended up going with a 17″ MacBook Pro. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made, I love it!
@Mac – heh when did Macs play games? naw only kidding though the gaming market on a macintosh isn’t the greatest sure they have WoW and Spore but their market isn’t really gaming is it? Though with their display quality you think larger companies would port their games to the Mac.
@Brady – I would have a mac if I could afford it, but now that I look at the new Macbook prices (~$1300) I wouldn’t be able to decide between a Macbook or a Canon 70-200mm f2.4 IS lens for my camera
Tyler, I know what you mean! I bought a 70-200mm f/4.0 for my camera, but I’ve been wanting to upgrade to the f/2.8 ever since I bought it.

Lol nice try with the donations, I hope you get a few bucks. I had the same thoughts with the computer. I mean I love the portability of it, but it just doesn’t make sense logistically, of having no cd drive and having so little space. I’d much rather have a Macbook Pro, and you’d be saving money to.

Doesn’t hurt to get some money eh? I mean if 1000 people donated $1 each it would be pretty quick right? I would like to have a decent laptop though it would make photography and blogging when not at home a bit easier.
Of course not, a little money never hurt anybody. Have you actually gotten any money from it? Yeah it definitely would help. I’m saving up for a laptop, but we’ll have to see if that ever happens. One of my goals is to earn enough money from my website to buy it, we’ll see what happens.
